    Description

Offered is a 6 1/2" round earthenware faience plate made by Gien France for the Paul Gauguin Museum in Tahita. The front shows a design developed by Gauguin in 1889 for a china plate. (The Brooklyn Museum has the hand colored zincograph for this design in its collection.) The design represents a Gauguin version of the Greek myth Leda and the Swan where Zeus comes to Earth as a swan and seduces Leda. At the top of the plate is an aphorism followed by Gauguin's signature. The aphorism translates somewhat loosely as "Evil be to him that evil thinks." It is a very colorful plate with simple drawings against an intense yellow background. The plate is in good condition with some barely noticeable crazing.
Note: There are multiple plates available, so of course condition will vary a little. However, all the plates offered are in good condition with no nicks, chips, cracks or repairs but with some light crazing more noticeable on the back than on the front. There may be light scratches, but I didn't detect any, so all the plates appear to have been lightly used, if used at all.
Please visit my eBay store, The Antiques Nook, to see lots more items for sale. If you'd like notice of the MONTHLY SALES I have in my store, please send me an email via eBay so I can add you to my list of customers to notify about them. Check my store regularly for both new and sales items.
I'll be happy to combine multiple purchases into one package to try to save you on shipping costs. However, most of the shipping services added an extra fee for any package bigger than 12x12x12 inches, so it's often more cost effective to keep the items in separate boxes to avoid the oversized box fee. I'll try to check it both ways and give you the best price. If an oversized box is needed for any package, FedEx is often the most cost-effective way to send it and I'll use them instead if that's the case. Please use the eBay shipping calculator to determine the cost of shipping. If you would like a package shipped by a method not shown OR can't use a specific service, let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate you.
Please examine the pictures carefully as they are part of the item description. All prices are in U.S. dollars. I use environmentally friendly Eco-nuts in packing.
